In an unanticipated shift in policy, the Florida Legislature has passed a measure granting discounted tuition rates to the children of undocumented immigrants.The bill would grants in-state tuition to thousands of “Dreamers”, or undocumented students, as long as they have attended a Florida public school for at least three years prior to applying for the tuition waiver.
It’s a surprising move from the state government and governor Rick Scott, who spoke about potentially considering the idea in a meeting with the Legislature’s Hispanic caucus earlier this week.
The bill passing 84-32 is a step in the right direction for all of Florida’s undocumented immigrants seeking a higher education. Gov. Scott is expected to sign the bill into law over the next several days.
